Fantasy, Girl was written by LyaNisha R. Gonzalez and opened Off-Broadway on August 18, 2005 at The Producer's Club in New York City, under the direction of Rhonney Greene and produced by Under the Spell Productions. After a successful, yet brief run, the show closed and underwent dramatic changes to the script. It was next performed August 26, 2006 at The New School for Drama as part of "Random Acts-One Act Play Festival"--a showcase of graduating students thesis works. The play was originally written for this purpose. This production was directed by another New School for Drama (formerly The Actor's Studio Drama School) graduate, Selena Ambush. It is this version of the play that was selected to participate in the 10th annual New York International Fringe Festival in August 2006. It was again directed by Ms. Ambush, and had a successful festival run.
Fantasy, Girl is a comedic and heartbreaking tale of one woman's journey to find love with the help of her muses, who happen to appear in the form of a singing motown-esque girl group. It deals with the humor, pain, and self-doubt of falling in love with someone who may not return the feeling. It's a fun musical ride through the Tunnel of Love, that the whole audience will remember.
On the surface, Fantasy,Girl is about Reina, a young African-American woman who loves a man who doesn't feel the same. Though she and Tyler met in college and developed a close friendship, her feelings deepened and grew into something more. As a writer, Reina's used to working her feelings out on the page, but while struggling with her feelings for Tyler and trying to finish her play for a demanding director, her sub-concious attempts to help her solve both problems, by springing to life in the form of three very opinionated and lively female singers; Diana (the lead), Effy (the talented fiesty scene stealer), and Flo (the innocent). Even Tyler takes up space in her subliminal conciousness. With her innermost thoughts springing from her creative mental pocket and into real life, Reina is essentially forcing herself to deal with the problems that haunt her. And eventually, that leads to a real life confrontation with Tyler, that becomes more about confronting her own demons than dealing with him. At the end of the play, Reina and Tyler's relationship is changed forever, and her dependency on her muses seems to have outgrown itself.
It is, of course, a timeless story of boy meets girl..., yet it's also something more. It's about honesty with one's self and what that truth can cost. It's about loving yourself and being brave enough to love another...even if it's unrequited. And ultimately, it's about moving on. In every aspect, it is a love story that forces the audience to re-examine their definition of what a love story truly is.
